Agrivoltaics
Agrivoltaics is the practice of combining agricultural activities with solar energy production. The most common form of agrivoltaics in the United States is solar sheep grazing, in which farmers pasture sheep on land that hosts solar arrays. By grazing under and around the panels, the sheep help maintain vegetation on the site. This can significantly increase the land’s productivity and enhance the local ecosystem while also helping farmers diversify their income, making it a win-win for the site and for farm communities!
Clearway uses solar grazing at several utility-scale solar sites in Hawaii, Utah and California. In 2025, we joined the American Solar Grazing Association – the nation’s leading farmer-led agrivoltaics organization – strengthening our commitment to regenerative land use and rural partnership. This membership helps support a growing base of solar sheep farmers, while providing Clearway with the best practices and industry standards needed to scale solar grazing effectively.
Together, we’re showing that renewable energy and agricultural heritage can thrive side-by-side, supporting healthy soils and local economies as we advance clean energy projects across the country.
