Repowering – and Recycling – at Mount Storm, West Virginia
In the fall of 2025, we began repowering the Mount Storm Energy Center in Grant County, West Virginia. The wind farm’s 132 existing turbines will be removed and replaced with 78 new, more efficient models, resulting in an 85% increase in Mount Storm’s overall electricity generation while using 40% fewer turbines, and extending the site’s useful life through improved use of existing infrastructure. Significant amounts of aluminum, cabling, fiberglass, and scrap metal from the old turbines are being recovered and recycled at regional facilities to meet our 85% minimum recycling commitment for the repower. This will build on the success of the 2021 repowering of our Pinnacle Wind Farm in Mineral County, WV, which resulted in 85% of the materials being recycled or repurposed and the project receiving an industry award for responsible practices.
Backed by a long-term power purchase agreement with Microsoft, the repowered facility will generate enough electricity to serve approximately 155,000 homes. The project represents a $735 million investment in West Virginia’s economy and will sustain local tax revenues, landowner payments, and high-quality jobs for another 35 years. Clearway has also pledged $3.6 million to the Mount Storm community benefit fund, reinforcing long-term local investment and economic stability.
