Solar Installation to Lower Operating Costs and Increase Sustainability for AmerisourceBergen

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. – DECEMBER 2018 – Taking another strong step toward sustainable operations, AmerisourceBergen announced a 2.27 megawatt (MW) solar installation at its California facility. Coupled with a solar power purchase agreement (PPA), the installation will be AmerisourceBergen’s most high-profile commitment to renewable energy to date. The comprehensive solution was developed by Clearway Energy Group.

“We recognize that what we do has economic, social and physical impacts and we strive to integrate socially responsible principles into our daily actions. Across our operations and supply chain, we’re creating healthier futures with innovative practices and technologies that improve efficiency and environmental sustainability,” said Erin Horvath, Senior Vice President of Distribution Services at AmerisourceBergen. “We actively look for solutions to advance our long-term energy goals, and Clearway Energy Group was a natural partner given their experience with procuring renewables and solving energy needs for Fortune 500 companies.”

The solar project will be installed on AmerisourceBergen’s distribution center in Sacramento, California, financed through a long-term agreement to purchase the electricity generated. With a system capacity of nearly 2,300 kilowatts, the solar installation will reduce operating costs for AmerisourceBergen and produce sufficient electricity to offset more than 80 percent of the facility’s annual electricity consumption from the grid – which is enough to power an equivalent of nearly 300 homes in one year. The project is expected to achieve commercial operation in 2019.

“Clearway is pleased to partner with AmerisourceBergen for this important step towards a clean energy future,” said Craig Cornelius, Chief Executive Officer of Clearway Energy Group. “We take pride in our partnerships and are glad to have played a part in developing a sustainable, pragmatic energy solution alongside AmerisourceBergen.”

At AmerisourceBergen, corporate citizenship comes naturally, as an effective energy strategy aligns with its purpose to create healthier futures. The company has made great strides on social and environmental mandates, actively seeking new ways to reduce energy consumption and cost, and made significant investments in distribution infrastructure and advanced warehouse management systems. In 2016, AmerisourceBergen began energy audits and will continue to expand energy-efficiency work to other business units to optimize operations of the entire pharmaceutical supply channel.
