Solar power blooms at Arizona State University campuses

Sustainability is as important to Arizona State University as it is to us, which makes our partnership a natural one. Today, solar energy generates more than 23 MW for ASU – more than 12 MW from our solar team. It's a massive undertaking that serves as an integral part of one of the university's major goals: to reach a net-zero carbon footprint.

At ASU's Tempe campus, more than 7,500 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels make up the Clearway Energy Group PowerParasol® parking structure. Generating more than 2 MW of electricity, the PowerParasol® also provides shade from the desert sun for 800 parking spaces adjacent to Sun Devil Stadium and Wells Fargo Arena.

Our unique challenges

  • To build an aesthetically pleasing, utility-scale PV system – one that blended well with ASU's image and life in the Phoenix-Tempe area
  • To manage multiple, busy, sprawling hardhat areas
  • To minimize disruption to students, faculty, classes and traffic – cancelling classes was never an option
